Regional History

This booklet is written to give the visitor to the Tasman and Forestier Peninsulas, and the Port Arthur region, an overview of what the noted historian Ian Brand called the 'Penal Peninsula'. As the Tasman and the Forestier Peninsulas are under the administration of the Tasman Municipality the area covered follows the Arthur Hightway from the northern end of the municipality, at Dunalley, acroos Eaglehawk Neck and around the highways and byways of the Tasman and Forestier Peninsulas. It gives a brief history of settlement of Van Diemen's Land as well as the settlement of the area. many convict sites are vistied as well as the walking trails, scenic places and those which provide accommodation and services to the visitor.
