 DescriptionWith the Pioneers is the history of white settlement and development of north-west Tasmania which had Port Sorell, at the mouth of the Rubican River, as its initial focal point. (The story of the other centre, the Van Diemen's Land Company establishment based at Circular Head, is not covered here). From Port Sorell private settlers spread in a westerly direction to Forth, and then to Don, Latrobe, Torquay (East Devonport) and Formby (West Devonport). The author relates the fascinating story of the pioneers, not only those who established the towns but also those who settled the adjacent rural hinterland, so the book has as its scope the history of the Latrobe and Devonport municipalities (including Melrose, Barrington, Nook and Kindred). |
